IN PARIS FIFTY YEARS AGO |
This interesting group of six well known figures in the earlier history of Utah was taken in Paris probably 50 years ago, or at the time the great French Exposition was in full swing. The figures shown are standing: Nathaniel H. Felt at the left, Brigham Young Jr. in the center, and Gulielmo G. R. Sangiovanni at the right: seated, Moses Thatcher at the left, John W. Young in the center and W. Perry Nebeker at the right. At the time the picture was taken, Brigham |
Young, Jr. was acting as commissioner from the Territory of Utah at the Exposition, and he was also president of the European mission. The others were elders in the mission. Nebeker in Switzerland, Sangiovanni in Italy and France and the others in Great Britain. Some of them as appears in the Deseret News of 1867 were released that year to return home. |

http://www.bl.uk/collections/westeuropean/frenchexhibitions.html drawing downloaded 9/18/03 Brian Roughton makes the point that America’s exhibit in 1867 was a failure due to our stiff landscapes etc. The art world was undergoing a big change. I wonder if Nathaniel H. Felt had an opinion. See http://www.roughtongalleries.com/exposition.html. See also http://www.roughtongalleries.com/accepted.html.
