1844 Succession Question | Thu 27 Jun 1844 | Copyrighted document and shall not be made available online. Mr. Ehat presents very interesting account of what took place with Brigham Young etc after Joseph Smith was martyred. Events at that time profoundly affected NHF Document 38; Tab ___; Author: Andrew Ehat |
1865 Patent for Leather Cutting | 1865 | This does not appear to be the same patent that is housed at the Phillips Library in Salem on the big sheep skin. This is yet another one that NHF obtained for his brother JGF. |
1877 PEF Debtor's Index | 1877 | This document raises more questions for me than it provides answers. Why would NHF owe money to the PEF at all? I can see why he would borrow money to go to Salt Lake, but I can't see why he wasn't asked to pay it back sooner. The year 1851 doesn't make sense since he immigrated in 1850, however, his debt may have been recorded in 1851 because may have become "overdue." |
Angell, Truman O. | | *** Three Stars! Autobiography of Truman O. Angell gives some very interesting insight to temple building. NHF is mentioned one time very precisely. |
Ashby, Benjamin is born at Salem, Essex, MA | Fri 19 Dec 1828 | *** Three Stars! Benjamin Ashby is 12 years younger than NHF, but he was born and raised in the same city. Benjamin's father is Nathaniel Ashby and would have known NHF. Benjamin is a gifted writer and described many of the events that took place in Salem and en route to Nauvoo. |
Aveson, Robert - Leaving Home | | **** Four Stars! A wonderful story of faith and dedication to the gospel by Robert Aveson. Elder Aveson does an outstanding job describing England at the time NHF served there, and mentions him twice in the same story.
It's interesting to website editor to see Elder Aveson worked for none other than the Anti-Mormon TBH Stenhouse who published the Salt Lake Telegraph. However, at the time Stenhouse appeared to be a believer. |
Benson, Ezra T. | | NHF had some interaction with ETB, but he was not mentioned in this journal. ETB was obviously a gifted man. |
Boston and Maine Railroad Depot 1 (Salem, MA) | 1910 | Photograph taken about 1910, but the train station would have been familiar to NHF when he was alive. The train station itself was close to where his grandfather lived. |
Boston and Maine Railroad Depot 2 (Salem, MA) | 1910 | 1910 Photograph |
Brigham Young on Politics and Priesthood | Fri 20 Jul 1849 | This effective research paper demonstrates the Church's position regarding politics after Brigham Young becomes President. NHF was President of St. Louis Conference at the time and therefore had many opportunities to dabble in politics as politicians solicited the Mormon block vote there. Click here for source document
Document 44; Tab ___; Author J. Keith Melville; Publisher: Highlights in Mormon Political History, Charles E. Merrill Monograph Series, No. 2, May 1967 |
Buckwalter, Margaret | | NHF is mentioned as marrying Margaret B. to Lemon Wickel in St. Louis. |
Burgess, Harrison | | A member of the City Council in Salt Lake. Burgess does a good job in describing his activities |
Cannell, Ada Margaret Kewley, A memoir of | Fri 24 Feb 1939 | The MR FELT mentioned in this memoir was probably NHF since the meetings took place in Liverpool, England.
"There were two who came frequently to our house to spend the evening with music and conversation. They were Lyman Martineaux and Mr. Felt. I forget Mr. Felt's first name. We had very pleasant times together." |
Chislett Narrative | | NHF is mentioned as one of those that met the tragic Willie and Martin Company with Franklin D. Richards. The Chislett Narrative has an axe to grind and can be found on many Anti-Mormon websites. |
Chronicles of Old Salem | | Not available online; Interesting timeline of Salem, MA history Document 29; tab 2; Author: Robotti, Frances Diane; Publisher: Bonanza Books; 1948, |
Church Chronology | | |
Cobb, Augusta Adams | | Since the webmaster does not understand the relationship between Brigham Young, Sister Cobb and NHF, I don't think I'll publish source material I know of yet. Most of the material is Anti-Mormon in nature, and almost always involves polygamy. Sister Cobb was a plural wife of Brigham Young as early as 1843/1844, and she was also a trusted associate of NHF in the east as he conducted business for the church. |
Crane, James | May 1856 | *** Three Stars! Bishop Crane's amazing memory corroborates much of the history I have learned about the church over the years. He mentions NHF one time in May 1856 after disembarking from a ship in Boston. I especially enjoyed his description of his life in Wales and also his life in Salt Lake County. Bishop Crane was bishop of the Herriman Ward in the Salt Lake County Stake. |
Crosby, Jesse W | | Jesse W. Crosby was born for the restoration and gives interesting insights to early history of the church including Nauvoo. JWC lived in the 17th Ward near where NHF lived in 1860. |
Diary of Levi Savage Jr. | | **** Four Stars! Journal of Levi Savage Jr is extremely valuable for at least two reasons in regards to NHF. Reason #1 is Savage's New York City and vicinity mission which was simultaneous with NHF's mission. This mission extended west throughout the Willie and Martin tragedy which NHF was also intimately involved. Reason #2 is Savage's simultaneous involvment with grain peddling etc with Allen's mill at the Jordan Road. NHF was, at that time, a partner with Allen and did Deseret News advertising. |
East India Marine Hall (Salem, MA) | | Photograph from about 1910, but the building would have been familiar to NHF; Building Dedicated in 1825 (this is mostly the way Joseph Smith would have seen it) |
Essex Institute (Salem, MA) | 1910 | Essex Institute
As It Must Have Mostly Looked In Nathaniel’s Day |
Essex Street 1 (Salem, MA) | 1910 | Photograph; Essex Street Looking North From Town Square; You can almost see the building NHF worked in every day on the right |

Farnham, Augustus Alwin | Sun 11 Feb 1849 | Biography, Notes, Genealogy of AA Farnham |
Felt, Mary L. Pile | 1866 | My great great grandmother left NHF's household while he was away on a mission in England. This research attempts to analyze the household she left. |
Gilbert, Timothy | | Correspondence to Millennial Star and other sources help Brother Gilbert and NHF meet in New York while NHF is serving a mission there with John Taylor and others as they defend plural marriage. |
Godbeites | | Article about the Godbeites which was a moderate Anti-Mormon schism that eventually became more of a counter Mormon culture movement. |
Grand Bang 1876 | Wed 05 Apr 1876 | A fascinating story of the grand explosion of Arsenal Hill in 1876. The explosion was mentioned by Georgie Spencer in her diary, and the Felt home and family would have been drastically affected that day and for days afterward. Scholarship is needed to estimate how much damage could have resulted to the family |
Heywood, Joseph L. | | Joseph Heywood was NHF's bishop in the 17th Ward. NHF also considered Heywood one of his friends. Heywood and Felt probably knew one another in Nauvoo especially after Brigham Young. Joseph Heywood was a U.S. Marshall. |
Hunter, Edward | | NHF named his son after this presiding Bishop of the Church, and also purchased a ranch in Round Valley next door to him. Click here for source document
Grampa Bill's G. A. Pages, Edward Hunter, This biographical sketch of Bishop Hunter was penned by Orson F. Whitney, Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, and was published in the LDS Biographical Encyclopedia. |
Hutchins, Kenneth | Sat 10 Feb 2001 | A letter from Jonathan C. Felt to President Hutchins of the Boston Massachusetts Stak |
Hyde, Orson | | Orson Hyde was one of the most influential leaders for NHF; OH probably presided over him while he served St. Louis, but Brigham Young would often communicate directly with NHF while he served in that capacity. As NHF lay on his "death bed," he reported seeing OH, Brigham Young, and Joseph Smith in vision. |
Journal of the House of Representatives of the United States, 43rd Congress, 1st Session, THURSDAY, January 29, 1874. | Thu 29 Jan 1874 | By Mr. Benjamin F. Butler: The remonstrance of N. H. Felt, A. P. Rockwood, and others, native-born citizens of Massachusetts, now residing in Utah, against the passage of certain bills now before Congress purporting to be in aid of the execution of the laws in the Territory of Utah, to the Committee on the Judiciary. |
Kane, Thomas L. - A Friend in Need | | Good background information about TLK. NHF is said to have "opened a correspondance" with TLK while he was in St. Louis, but no trace of letters exist to my knowledge. It has always made me curious why NHF's biographer would have mentioned it in the first place. Click here for source document
SaintsWithoutHalos.com maintained and edited by Scott G. Kenney; Kenney is one of the most gifted history editors I have ever read -- Jonathan C. Felt |
Kane, Thomas L. - The Mormons | Tue 26 Mar 1850 | Discourse delivered before the Historical Society of Pennsylvania March 26, 1850 by Colonel Kane. NHF is reputed to have had a relationship with TLK. Click here for source document
Probably copied from SaintsWithoutHalos.com, but this material consists of portions of a discourse delivered before the Historical
Society of Pennsylvania March 26, 1850. |
More Precious Than Gold | 1849 | LDS Church leaders capitalized on the economic opportunity provided by the gold rush by creating a revolving fund called the Perpetual Emigrating Fund (PEF), which the Saints were asked to sustain
Woods is an expert on Mormon emigration, and he has personally related many important things to this webmaster. I don't think you can understand NHF until you understand his role in building the kingdom as an emigration organizer. |
Morgan College | | Deseret News Article, June 1998; Since John Morgan lived in the 17th Ward, it's a lead pipe cince that NHF knew Morgan. Click here for source document
Education Pioneer, John Morgan founded Morgan Commercial College, which taught many prominent early day Utahns

Mormons and Mormonism, The National Review, July 1862 | Jul 1862 | Full Text not inserted for indexing...This article is outstanding in its opinions and interpretations primarily for non-Mormon readers. Not all of it is accurate or decent, but it is thoroughly interesting.
Notes: The text viewable for this collection was generated from the page images by optical character recognition (OCR). No corrections have been applied. [More about text] Page images for periodicals other than Garden and Forest are mounted at Cornell
University Library.
Notes By Editor: I have edited some of the more obvious errors in the OCR text to make it more readable. I have also footnoted some of the more obscure passages when I didn’t know the meaning. This study is for the sake of NHFelt.org and its nterpretation is solely for that purpose. I find this article important to know the world in which Nathaniel H. Felt lived in 1862, and how the outside world regarded Mormons. Nathaniel H. Felt would soon leave on mission to England, but in 1862 it appears he is living a normal life in Salt Lake City. NHF always watched the press, and he probably read this same article with high interest. - Jonathan C. Felt, Editor |
Nauvoo Holy Order | | An interesting research paper about Nauvoo priesthood organization. This paper helps to clarify how NHF's friendships probably formed. It is the webmaster's assumption that to have been in as many circles as NHF traveled, he would be needed to be completely loyal to Brigham Young all of his life. |
Niether White Nor Black | | Both NHF and John Taylor are quoted from Chicago about slaves in the Utah Territory. Click here for cached document

Old North Bridge (Salem, MA) | 1910 | A 1910 photograph of the place where Captain John Felt helped repulse Leslie in Salem. By this time there is no draw bridge and it certainly looks small compared to the heroic tale. |
Pack, Julia Ives | | 12/31/2002: Notable because the Pack family lived in the Salt Lake 17th Ward |
Parkinson, Samuel R. | Dec 1848 | NHF confirms brother Parkinson in St. Louis at age 17 |
Parry, John | | *** Three Stars! NHF is mentioned twice, but many details of the Latter-day Saints in Wales are revealed in this great journal. |
Penrose, Charles W. - Discourses | Sun 11 Apr 1880 | On 11 April 1880 NHF spoke in the Assembly Hall before Charles W. Penrose. CWR's discourse was captured by clerks, and he happened to mention NHF when he started speaking. CWR and NHF served in England together on a mission for the church.

Pioneer Christmas | Thu 25 Dec 1851 | Christmas always had a strong appeal to the pioneers and was observed by them no matter what their conditions were |
Primary Hospital | | Primary Childrens Hospital was conceived by Louie B. Felt who was NHF's first daughter-in-law. |
Road to Bingham | Wed 27 Aug 1862 | I like this document because the Jordan Mills is mentioned and the petition is signed by a Daniel R. Allen; I assume this is the Allen that NHF was a partner. Does this mean he lived nearby the mills and probably operated it. NHF was probably a good agent and salesman for Allen. |
Roy H. Felt breaks from jail in St. George,Utah at age 17 | Fri 02 Jan 1903 | This is interesting because the news clipping appears on the same page as a clip about his 6th cousin Clyde Felt who was also having his trouble with things related to the law.
Roy F. Felt, a 17-year-old boy, who was in jail in St. George, last week made his escape by the assistance of another boy. Both boys secured horses, cut the telegraph wires to prevent word being sent in advance, and rode away, but were captured the next day. |
Scoville, Lucius | | Scoville mentions NHF as President in St. Louis as he passes through on his way to New Orleans to preside there. NHF and Scoville would therefore have some interaction. |
Silver, William J. | | Undocumented account of Latter-day Saints traveling from Liverpool to New York in fall of 1855. John Taylor and his assistants Felt and Robbins are there to meet ship. This is probably when NHF meets Mary L. Pile. |
Smith, Joseph for President 1844 #1 | 1844 | This event in church history profoundly affected NHF and family since Brigham Young spent much time in the Salem area during that fateful year. Click here for source document

Smith, Joseph III | | Joseph Smith III was unusually descriptive of his surroundings and everyday experiences. These memoirs will be useful to the historian looking for details of Nauvoo life. Additionally, some of the more negative opinions of the Utah Church will be more understood after reading these passages. Joseph Smith III, however, is not strident or corrosive in his attitude toward the "Brighamites" |
Snow, Erastus | | You would think Elder Snow would have mentioned NHF at least once, but he did mention exposing Sister Felt to small pox in St. Louis. NHF and Erastus Snow would have, in fact, known each other quite well since Snow was the main missionary in Salem when when NHF was baptized. |
Snow, William | | Biography of William Snow edited by Paul E. Price. William is the older brother of Erastus Snow. William Snow and NHF served together as aldermen in Salt Lake City. |
Spencer, Daniel | | Biography edited by Claudia Sadler. Daniel Spencer and NHF served together in various capacities, and their paths crossed just as the tragic Willie and Martin Company was getting a late start on the plains. Spencer was in Salem at the time of the Martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum. |
St. Louis and the Nauvoo Exodus | 1850 | I enjoyed reading Hartley's narrative of the Ellison Family, because it describes St. Louis at the time NHF lived there and it is about a family in Layton for whom I have great respect. |
Taylor, John | | Biography of John Taylor by B.H. Roberts. This work will shed light on some of NHF's activities especially during the New York mission to publish the newspaper "The Mormon." Its purpose was to "to disabuse the public mind, then fast being prejudiced against the Church by the tongue of slander." |

Tripp, Enoch Bartlett | | Mentions NHF as one he travels with on his way to mission field at the time of he and John Taylor going to New York. |
Wakefield, Caroline R | | Sister Wakefield mentions NHF's role in organizing ship American Congress when he was a missionary in England. |
When I Lived In Salem | 1835 | Four Stars ****! Delightful collection of stories from Salem at the time NHF lived. This document is currently being typed by my son Ammon and me for the web. |
Woodruff, Wilford - Journal | | President Woodruff and NHF were acquaintances and worked together from time to time. In the preface of Woodruff's journal it states, "Wilford Woodruff kept one of the most important journals in the early Church. Recorded within its pages are some of the greatest moments in the Church's history, much of which might otherwise have gone unrecorded. He was personally acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and John Taylor, and kept a faithful record of many of their private meetings and counsel. Here for the first time in print are selected out the choicest gems of doctrine and history as they were recorded by this great man." |
Woodruff, Wilford (12 Aug 1848) | Sat 12 Aug 1848 | Elder Woodruff was an impressive documenter of LDS history, and he mentioned NHF on several occasions. On this occasion NHF was with another missionary named Lewis Robins. |
Woodruff, Wilford (12 Jul 1848) | Wed 12 Jul 1848 | Elder Woodruff and family meet NHF in St. Loui |
Young, Brigham - Discourse at April Conference, 6 April 1857 | Mon 06 Apr 1857 | The talk may be significant because B.Y. mentions John Taylor's mission in N.Y. He mentions the character of Alexander Robbins' preaching (dry and ineffective). B.Y. also asks for everyone to store up 7 years worth of grain. NHF was a grain merchant from about this point in time. |
Young, Brigham (Manuscript History) | Thu 27 Jun 1844 | BY and NHF did many things together for many years, but the manuscript history of BY rarely mentions NHF or Salem, MA |
Young, Mary Adelia Felt (Dell) | Thu 19 May 1864 | Handwritten biography of Mary Dell Young who married one of the sons of Brigham Young. Mary Dell was a daughter of NHF and Mary Louise Pile |
Zwick, Craig W. | Sat 10 Mar 2001 | On March 10, 2001 Jonathan Felt and Diane LaFrandt wrote a letter to Elder Zwick in support of the Nathaniel Felt House project in Salem. |
